Uses
Synotic Otic Solution is a topical corticosteroid used in the treatment of inflammation and itching of the ear.
Possible Side Effects
Synotic may cause a garlic or oyster-like breath and taste in the mouth. Corticosteroids with Synotic may cause a short, stinging sensation, especially on open skin, and a temporary increase in temperature of the treated area may be noticed.
If ingested or given at high doses for an extended period of time, the most common side effect of corticosteroids with Synotic is an increase in the amount of drinking and urinating. Less commonly, you may see an increased appetite, a change in weight, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes. Consult your veterinarian if you notice any of the above side effects.
If your pet experiences an allergic reaction to the medication, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If you observe any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Drug & Food Interactions
Contact your veterinarian before using Synotic with vitamins and supplements, or in the presence of other medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, carprofen (Rimadyl), deracoxib (Deramaxx), or etodolac (EtoGesic), since interactions may occur.
Precautions
This medication should not be used in animals who are hypersensitive to fluocinolone or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Synotic Otic Solution should also not be used in pregnant animals or in those with a perforated eardrum. Talk to your veterinarian about any necessary ear examinations or laboratory testing before and during treatment with topical corticosteroids.
